The officer in command in 1978, when Afghanistan's first president was brutally assassinated, now lives in Norway. Ever since the murder, Afghanistan has been ravaged by war. Together with several members of his family, Daoud Khan was assassinated in the Presidential Palace in Kabul in the morning of 28 April 1978 in the course of a revolution led by the Marxist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA). That morning a young Communications Officer, Emamoddin Jomaddin, was dispatched to the Palace, together with a party of soldiers. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's Department of Investigative Journalism has since been trying to determine exactly what happened that fateful morning in the Palace. From his home on the west coast of Norway Emamoddin Jomaddin explains that his task was to persuade the President to surrender. 'I was just the messenger, ' he told NRK. 'I did it by the book, paying full respect to the President.' In just a few chaotic moments 18 people, among them several women and children, were killed. Now, 31 years later, eye witnesses and former leaders add more details to the story.
