Summary
The purpose of this study was to determine how middle school teachers and students would benefit from the sharing of creative ideas, strategies, and techniques. Teachers were asked to voluntarily submit, in writing, any games, activities, projects, lesson plans, interdisciplinary units, classroom management tips, or enrichment activities, that they had used successfully. The ideas were compiled into four editions of a newsletter entitled, ""Teacher Idea Exchange"", or T.I.E. After all the newsletters were distributed, teachers were asked to complete a survey form that evaluated the value of the newsletter and the impact the ideas had on their curriculum. Ten teachers who had either submitted an idea or used one of the published ideas were interviewed to determine why certain ideas were submitted and used. Nineteen different teachers submitted a total of 30 ideas, which represents a 26.3% participation rate in the faculty of 72 teachers. Comments from teachers indicated that although the ideas were useful and there was value to sharing ideas among teachers, many of them did not submit ideas because of lack of time. The main benefit of the T.I.E. was the attention-getting effect the ideas had upon the students. Teachers reported that using the ideas added variety and interest to their lessons. A secondary benefit was that the T.I.E. served as a catalyst to increase communication among teachers, as teachers discussed the ideas and complimented one another on their contributions.
